Finding below-market bankruptcy representation
Between free legal aid and full-price attorneys, several options provide quality bankruptcy representation at reduced cost.
Lawyer referral services
Many bar associations operate lawyer referral services that connect you with attorneys willing to offer reduced-fee initial consultations (often $25-50) and sometimes reduced overall fees. Contact your local or state bar association.
Nonprofit credit counseling agencies
Approved credit counseling agencies (required before filing) may offer referrals to reduced-fee attorneys. Some bankruptcy attorneys partner with these agencies to offer bundled services.
Unbundled legal services
Some attorneys offer "limited scope" representation, where they handle specific parts of your case rather than everything. For example, an attorney might review your completed petition for a flat fee without representing you at the 341 meeting. This can significantly reduce costs.
Payment plans
Many bankruptcy attorneys offer payment plans for their fees. In Chapter 13, attorney fees can be paid through the repayment plan over 3-5 years. In Chapter 7, some attorneys allow you to pay over several months before filing.
Tip: Always get fee agreements in writing before representation begins. Understand exactly what is included and what may cost extra.
